How to Cite Norton Anthology in MLA

The various Norton Anthologies are popular texts which appear in college-level English classrooms across the country. Because citing an anthology is tricky, you must take pains to include the publication information, for both the anthology itself and the location of the work you're referencing within the anthology, in your in-text citations as well as your "works cited" page.

Instructions

  1. Works Cited Page

    • 1

Identify the name of the author whose work you're referencing, the title of the work, the name of the particular Norton Anthology you're using, the editors, the publication information and date and the range of page numbers for the cited work.

    • 2

Begin your entry with the author's surname first, followed by his first name: Bacon, Francis.

    • 3

Write the title of the work which you are citing after the author's name: Bacon, Francis. "Of Truth."

    • 4

Write the title of the anthology. The title of the anthology can be either underlined or placed in italics: Bacon, Francis. "Of Truth." The Norton Anthology of English Literature.

    • 5

Add the name(s) of the editor(s) of the anthology, with the abbreviation "Ed." before them. This abbreviation means "Edited by," and so is the same even if there are multiple editors: Bacon, Francis. "Of Truth." The Norton Anthology of English Literature. Ed. M.H. Abrams and Stephen Greenblatt.

    • 6

Add the city of publication, the publisher and the date: Bacon, Francis. "Of Truth." The Norton Anthology of English Literature. Ed. M.H. Abrams and Stephen Greenblatt. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2000.

    • 7

Write the page numbers for the work within the anthology and the medium of publication: Bacon, Francis. "Of Truth." The Norton Anthology of English Literature. Ed. M.H. Abrams and Stephen Greenblatt. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2000. 1531-1532. Print.

    • 8

Double space your Works Cited page. Each entry's first line should be flush left and every subsequent line in an entry should be indented 1/2 an inch from the left.

    In-Text Citations

    • 9

Cite each paraphrase or quotation you use. If you mention the author's name in the sentence, cite only the page number for the quote or paraphrase in a parenthetical citation at the end of your sentence: (1531).

    • 10

Cite the author's name and the page number in the parenthetical citation if you do not mention the author's name within your sentence: (Bacon 1531).

    • 11

Cite only the name of the piece that you're referencing and the author's name in text. Do not cite the anthology name in the text of your paper. Your reader will be able to find the full citation information for the anthology in your Works Cited list.
