Computer Design Education

Computer designers develop, test and analyze software, ranging from video game design to business applications. There is not one solitary academic path for someone interested in computer design and courses can be added to the curriculum based on career interests of the individual.
  1. Academic Skills

    • In addition to enjoying working with computers, computer designers should enjoy mathematical and scientific coursework, as these academic areas will form the foundation of the engineering skills required to be an effective designer. An aptitude for the visual arts will be a benefit to those interested in the graphic or game design field. Problem-solving, analytical skills and effective communication are all traits that computer designers must possess to excel at their job.

    Degree

    • Though some job opportunities require only an associate's degree or certificate, employers prefer a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a computer-related field. Some employers may require a graduate degree. Typical majors include mathematics, computer science, physical sciences, computer information systems and software engineering.

    Supplemental Coursework

    • In addition to the coursework required for your major, employers desire applicants to have coursework experience in the field to which they are applying. For instance, businesses hiring designers for business applications will want an employee who has studied management and business.

    Experience

    • Employers hire based on experience as well as degree. Students should plan on including an internship as part of their educational background to increase their employment chances.

    Certifications

    • Vendors and software firms offer certifications for specific programs, which prove a designer's competency in their product. Private computing societies may offer these certifications as well. These certifications are not required by all employers but they may provide a competitive edge in the job market.

    Continuing Education

    • Computer designers must stay updated on the latest developments in technology. They will need to take additional courses in their chosen field throughout their career.
