Computer Science Degree Vs. Game Design Degree

Because of the presence of computers in many aspects of daily life, the demand for employees with computer degrees is growing rapidly. Some schools offer several different computer degrees. Computer science is one of the usual degree offerings, but some colleges have others as well, such as game design, which is also computer-related.
  1. Computer Programming

    • Computer programming is one of the basic building blocks of any computer-related degree program. Some of the jobs related to computers require you to know how to write and execute programs. Those jobs that do not require direct programming often require you to have an understanding of programming to do your job effectively. Degrees in both computer science and game design require you to take classes in computer programming, so you are able to effectively work in either field.

    Degree Focus

    • The focus of a computer science degree and a degree in game design are very different. The computer science degree aims to prepare you for a job in the general computer field. You will learn how to maintain both computer hardware and software and how to use various programming languages. If you choose a degree in game design instead, the focus of your educational program is to learn how to effectively create and program video games. Testing and identifying bugs and issues are other skills taught in this degree program.

    Jobs After Graduation

    • The type of degree you choose dictates the type of job you qualify for after you graduate. With a degree in computer science, you qualify for a wider range of job titles. This degree tells employers you are educated in the operations of computers and are capable of working most jobs in the computer field. However, if you choose a game design degree, you are most likely to find a job in the video game industry, either creating or testing video games for developers.

    Classes

    • The classes taken in each degree program may overlap. Because both degrees require computer programming knowledge, you will take classes in both computer programming languages and high levels of math. However, not all of the classes will be the same. If you major in game design, you will take graphic design, animation and storytelling classes. With a degree in computer science, your classes will focus more on the technical aspects of computers to gain a thorough understanding of the machines and how they work.
