How to Do In-Text References for Pictures in MLA Format

MLA format is widely used within the humanities as the go-to style for writing scholarly papers and articles, especially in the disciplines of language and literature. The MLA lays down the guidelines for MLA, which features simple in-text citations in parentheses followed by an alphabetical "Works Cited" list at the end of a document.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the name or title of the image or provide a short, generalized description in italics, followed by the last name of the artist in parentheses so that it reads "name of image (artist)."

    • 2

Cite the numbered image in parentheses as "figure" or "fig." followed by a number, for indirect references to an image. For example, "The great horned owl (figure 1)..."

    • 3

Label all figures within the text as "Figure x" with each image numbered consecutively e.g. "Figure 1," "Figure 2." Following "Figure x" in the image caption include the information for the image from the appropriate reference on your "Works Cited" page.
