How to Properly Use a Three Beam Balance

If you need an inexpensive device for precisely weighing small objects, the triple beam balance can fit the bill. The triple beam balance is a typical mechanical balance with a pan on one side and three beams that measure in 100-, 10- and 1-gram increments. The balance can measure mass down to a tenth of a gram.

Instructions

    • 1

Zero the balance. With the pan empty, move the three counters on the beams all the way to the left so the balance reads zero. If the pointer at the far right does not align with the fixed mark, adjust the knob --- or counter weight --- under the pan until the balance reads 0.00 g.

    • 2

Place the object you want to weigh on the pan, and let the balance settle.

    • 3

Move the 100-gram weight to the right to determine the first measurement. Once the pointer drops below the fixed mark, you have gone too far. Move the counter one notch to the left to find the correct measurement on the 100-gram beam.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 on the 10-gram beam.

    • 5

Fine-tune your measurement using the 1-gram beam. You may weigh to the nearest tenth of a gram on the 1-gram beam.

    • 6

Add the numbers from the three beams to calculate the mass of the object. a
