Besides having knowledge and experience on all chemical processes, the forensic chemist also needs to have good speaking skills and able to clearly explain and defend her results in court. A forensic chemist is considered an expert in her field. Most forensic chemists will work for state or government organizations that are associated with the medical examiner's office.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in a bachelor's program in forensic science. If the university of your choice does not offer a forensic-science degree, a criminalist or chemistry degree is also proper training.

    • 2

Tailor your classes for your specific area of interest within forensic chemistry. Individuals that want to work with trace evidence should study material science, soil chemistry, geology and learn as many instrumentation skills as they can. Those interested in toxicology should focus on courses in chemistry, biochemistry and physiology. Individuals that want to work more with DNA should focus on biochemistry, genetics and microbiology.

    • 3

A graduate degree is not necessary, but if your bachelor's degree did not provide the necessary training, a graduate degree can ensure that you have the necessary education to be a forensic chemist.

    • 4

Acquiring some knowledge of legal procedures can also set you apart from the rest. A law degree is not required, but a course or two studying aspects of the legal system that pertain to forensics is recommended.

    • 5

Obtain as much hands-on training as possible. This hands-on training can also be in school besides work experience. Working with laboratory equipment and other forensic-related equipment means that you will only need a short training period.

    • 6

Take at least one public-speaking course. Communication is important, as a forensic chemist will need to report results orally as well as in writing.
