Electrical License Testing

Obtaining an electrical license in the United States requires a certain level of training, a number of hours working in the field and passing a test based on the National Electric Code (NEC). The NEC is published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
  1. State by State Regulations

    • Each state sets its own standards for licensing electricians. Most states have established reciprocity with other states. Alaska, for example, reciprocates with Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.

    Preparing for the Test

    • The test is based on the NEC. However, the states do test on different years of the NEC. California tests on the 2005 version, while Florida tests on the 2008 edition.

    Test Administrators

    • The tests are given by private contractors in most states. Georgia uses PSI and Idaho contracts with Pearson VUE. Michigan administers the test through its Electrical Administrative Board.
