List of GRE Test Centers

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a test required by many graduate schools in order to be admitted to their graduate programs. Like the SAT for getting into college, the GRE has four sections: analytical writing, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and a test section. Most students who take the GRE take it on a computer, although some locations still offer a paper-based test.
  1. Computer-Based Tests

    • The computer-based GRE is available year-round at hundreds of test centers in the United States and abroad. It is available on most college campuses, and is usually available in multiple locations in large cities; the city of Chicago, for instance, has five different testing centers. Individual testing centers set the dates and times that individuals may take the GRE, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Paper-Based Test

    • The paper-based GRE is available only where computer-based testing is unavailable. Testing dates for paper-based tests are established by ETS, the administrator of the test, and all test dates are firm. Not all available test centers are open on all test dates, so you should register early and verify your appointment well in advance of the test date.

    Testing Rules

    • Whether you take a computer- or a paper-based test, you may take the GRE only one time per calendar month, and no more than five times per 12-month period. This rule applies even if you choose to cancel your scores on a test. The testing center will allow you to have with you scratch paper that they provide and pencils; you may be required to leave personal items like watches and wallets outside of the testing center.

    Registration

    • Individuals interested in taking the test may register for it online, over the phone, by fax or by mail. Be sure to know the code of your testing center when you register. Testing center locations and identification codes are available on the ETS website, listed in the Resources section below. You may reschedule or cancel your testing date with no financial penalty no later than three days before your appointment; this three-day-rule does not include the day of your test or the day of your rescheduling or cancel request. You may change your testing center for a $50 fee.
