Safety Harness Training on an Oil Derrick

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, requires employers to inform employees about any hazards they could face on the job. To comply with this, employers must provide oil derrick workers with a safety harness and ensure that they use them to prevent falling accidents. They must also train workers to use a harness properly.
  1. Requirements

    • In addition to learning about hazards they face on their specific worksite, employees must receive training on general OSHA standards for protecting against a fall. They must also learn the correct way to use, maintain and inspect their fall protection system. OSHA also wants employers to explain any limitations the equipment presents.

    Retraining

    • Employees should be retrained whenever it becomes obvious they lack knowledge. Retraining should also occur whenever there are changes in equipment or procedures, or when unsafe situations occur on the worksite.

    Documentation

    • Employers are required to document training and keep a record that includes the employee's name, date of training, and signature of either the employee or the person who trained him.

    Additional Responsibilities

    • In addition to providing training, employers should make sure that employees use the equipment correctly while they're working. They are also responsible for ensuring that employees aren't exposed to openings that don't have protective guards placed around them.
