Hazmat ID Training

OSHA requires anyone who responds to a release of hazardous material to receive training. The type of training received depends on the person's duties. First responders, HazMat employees and military personnel, whose job it is to identify whether a material is dangerous or not, receive HazMatID training. HazMatID is a portable piece of equipment that uses a form of infrared spectroscopy to identify biological agents and chemicals.
  1. Operator

    • Smiths Detection, the manufacturer of HazMatID, provides a one-day training session on-site as part of the purchase agreement. Basic operation of the equipment doesn't require intensive training. Students learn how to use the HazMatID and perform preventative maintenance. The company also offers advanced and customized training, including train-the-trainer, refresher courses and training for third-party representatives.

    Technical

    • Smiths Detection also provides technical training to qualified technicians so they can repair the HazMatID. The technical training program is meant for customers who need to have a Smiths Detection certified technician on-site. It's also offered to customers who have purchased a large number of Smiths Detection products.

    Curriculum

    • The basic Hazmat course concentrates on the principles of infrared fingerprinting and how the HazMatID equipment performs a sample analysis. The advanced course looks at sample characterization and mixture samples. It takes one day to complete these courses. A two-day refresher course in the objectives of portable appliance testing is also offered.
