Air Traffic Schools

Air traffic controllers are responsible for guiding aircraft entering or exiting airspace around airports. These aircrafts are monitored on radar screens as they fly over radar sites. To handle complications that can come from everyday air traffic, weather conditions, and possible mechanical complications that present emergencies, specialized education is required. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has compiled a list of more than 35 approved air traffic schools.
  1. Northeast

    • The Community College of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, just 40 miles west of Pittsburgh, offers the number one rated air control program in the United States at its Aviation Sciences Center. The Daniel Webster College in Nashua, New Hampshire was founded in 1965 and was originally named the New England Aeronautical Institute.

    Midwest

    • Lewis University, located in Romeoville, Illinois, has an on-campus airport for a hands-on training program for students interested in air traffic control, aviation maintenance or becoming a professional pilot. Students benefit from the on-campus flight simulators, hangar and machine shops. The Lewis University got its start in 1932 as a technical school focusing on aviation technology.

    South

    • Daytona Beach, Florida is home to the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach campus). Degrees available at Embry-Riddle include air traffic management, applied meteorology, and the safety science degree. The College of Aviation has a simulation center, a flight center and an aircraft maintenance facility. Students receive training in a "living laboratory" researching security system modeling, air traffic control interfaces and safety systems. The Flight Training Department houses more than 75 aircraft and offers eight flight courses.

    West

    • The Aviation Department of Arizona State University is home to one of only three altitude chambers in the United States and offers flight simulators as well. Students attending the Aviation Program can receive a Bachelor of Science degree in air traffic management amongst others. Auburn, Washington is home of the Green River Community College's Aviation Program. Students attending Green River work toward a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree.
