Ohio Air Traffic Control Schools

All air traffic controllers, or ATCs, in the United States are certified by and employees of the Federal Aviation Authority. Training takes place at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. Thirty-seven postsecondary institutions have partnered with the FAA to offer preliminary training under the Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative, or AT-CTI. One of these institutions, Kent State University, is in Ohio.
  1. Kent State ATC Training

    • ATC training at Kent State is offered as a minor in the bachelor of science program of the Faculty of Science School of Aeronautics. Successful completion of the academic requirements and receipt of a BS degree with an ATC minor qualifies the student to apply to the FAA Academy to fill "developmental air traffic control specialist positions." AT-CTI graduates are eligible for an exemption from the Academy's 5-week Air Traffic Basics course. Kent State only offers the AT-CTI training at the main campus. The program lasts eight semesters.

    Subjects

    • Students at Kent State must complete 36 credit hours of Kent Core classes in addition to course requirements particular to their major and minor areas of study. Non-Kent Core subjects studied in the AT-CTI program include aeronautics, avionics, information technology, flight theory, airport management and aviation weather.

    Critical Courses

    • Kent State designates 11 courses in the AT-CTI program as "critical." Critical courses must be completed in the suggested semester "to ensure timely graduation." In the AT-CTI stream, critical courses are part of the set curriculum in the first, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth semesters. First semester critical courses are Introduction to Aeronautics, FAA Orientation and Elements of Flight Theory.

    Theory-Laboratory Courses

    • Eight of the critical courses constitute four pairs of theory-practical training. Each pair of courses must be taken together. In fourth semester the critical courses are Fundamentals of Air Traffic Control and Fundamentals of Air Traffic Control Laboratory. In sixth semester the critical courses are En Route Air Traffic Control and En Route Air Traffic Control Laboratory. En Route Air Traffic Control II and En Route Air Traffic Control II Laboratory are the semester-seven critical courses, followed by Fundamentals of Air Traffic Control II and Fundamentals of Air Traffic Control II Laboratory in the eigth and final semester.
