Tribally Controlled Community Colleges

The Tribally Controlled Community College Assistance Act of 1978 provides community colleges that are controlled by American Indian tribes on reservations with federal assistance. It gave American Indian students the opportunity to attend a college nearer to their homes and jobs. As of 2011, 25 tribally-controlled community colleges had received funds because of this act.
  1. Fond du Lac College

    • Fond du Lac College is located in Colquet, Minnesota. It was created in 1987 by the Minnesota legislature and is controlled by the Fond du Lac Reservation. Students may choose to study business, liberal arts, law enforcement or American Indian studies. More than 2,000 students enroll in Fond du Lac Community College each year and the student to instructor ratio is 18 to 1.

    Turtle Mountain Community College

    • Located near Belcourt, North Dakota, Turtle Mountain Community College is controlled by the Chippewa Indian Reservation. Founded in 1972, this college is located within the Turtle Mountain Band of the reservation and most of its students are from the area as well. Students may study for associate degrees in 37 different fields or receive a certificate in five fields. Four-year degrees are also available in Secondary Science Teacher Education and Elementary Education.

    Fort Peck Community College

    • Fort Peck Community College is controlled by the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes of Fort Peck in Montana. The main campus is located in Poplar, with another campus in nearby Wolf Point. Average student enrollment is about 435, most of whom reside on the Fort Peck Reservation. In addition to associate degrees in subjects such as business and education or certificates as technicians for accountants or electrical line-workers, Fort Peck Community College offers Bachelor and Master's distance learning degrees through nearby universities.

    Nebraska Indian Community College

    • Located in Norfolk, Nebraska Indian Community College was created in 1972 to provide the reservations of the Omaha, Winnebago and Santee Sioux tribes with educational opportunities. Two other campuses now serve the Omaha and Santee Sioux tribes. Students may earn Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in various fields. Nebraska Indian Community College has transfer agreements with nearby colleges and universities including the University of Nebraska at both Kearney and Lincoln and Wayne State College.

    Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Community College

    • The Lac Courte Community College is located near Hayward, Wisconsin, and is controlled by the Ojibwe tribe. Four other campuses are located on nearby Ojibwe reservations. Students may receive an associate degree in programs such as education, casino operations management, business and nursing. Certificates may be obtained for child day care, GIS and medical transcription.
