American University (AU) offers certificate programs, associate programs, bachelors of arts or sciences as well as masters and doctoral degrees. There are six main schools of study from which a range of majors derive and not all majors are available for all degrees or programs. The main schools include College of Arts and Science, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, School of International Service, School of Public Affairs, and Washington College of Law.
Majors offered by the College of Arts and Sciences are predominantly for bachelors degrees, although there are some that apply to master degree programs. The list of majors include: anthropology, art history, performing arts, music, liberal studies, sociology, psychology, history, biology, chemistry, audio technology, education and teaching, economics, computer science, political science, environmental science, literature and many others. The available doctoral degrees include: anthropology, economics, history and psychology.
The Kogod School of Business is recognized by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The list of bachelors of science majors offered include: accounting and taxation, information technology, international business, management, business-language and culture studies, marketing, business administration, and business and music. Kogod also offers specializations for BS in Business Administration. Specializations include: entrepreneurship, finance, international business, international finance, management, marketing, real estate, information systems and technology.
The School of Communications of AU is recognized by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the majors it offers are: journalism, film and media arts, public communication and international media.
Additionally, students pursuing graduate programs major in communication, film and electronic media (Master of Fine Arts), film and video (Master of Arts).
Majors offered under the School of International Service (the largest international affairs school in the United States) include: international studies, language and area studies (French, German, Russian, Area Studies and Latin America). Majors for study abroad programs include: international communication, economic development, economic relations, U.S. foreign policy, peace and conflict resolution and global environmental politics.
The School of Public Affairs is divided into three main departments of study: government, public administration and policy, and justice, law and society. SPA is a member of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration and it also offers courses that are not linked to a specific degree; these include: lobbying, campaign management, and women and politics studies.
Founded in 1949, WCL offers clinical programs and specialized programs with majors in: international law, human rights, international commercial arbitration and intellectual property. Degrees offered are JD (Juris Doctor), LLM (Master of Laws) and SJD (Doctor or Juridical Science) degrees. AU and its schools and colleges are recognized by regional, national and international accrediting agencies, as well as international societies of education (see Reference 3).
