A List of American Law Schools

If you want to pursue a law degree, American universities offer a wide range of concentrations including civil, criminal and contract law. This broad selection can make narrowing your choice of law schools a difficult task. Begin with deciding what type of law you wish to practice before seeking out a degree program. Once you have decided on a discipline, narrowing the choices of available programs and specific schools becomes much easier.
  1. Albany Law School

    • The Albany Law School in New York State asserts they are the oldest independent law school in the United States. Albany provides Doctorate of Jurisprudence and Master of Laws degrees with 14 concentrations and makes available joint degrees through other universities. The faculty to student ratio is approximately 13-to-1, with over 50 full-time and 50 part-time faculty on staff. The school also provides a graduate career center and boasts over a 90 percent placement rate.

    Cleveland-Marshall College of Law

    • Cleveland-Marshall is over 100 years old and boasts excellent diversity in its student population. Cleveland-Marshall was the first law school in Ohio to admit females, and one of the first to admit minorities. The college was granted accreditation by the American Bar Association in 1957 and became a member of the Association of American Law Schools in 1967. Nearly 70 percent of Ohio municipal, trial and appellate judges in Cuyahoga County, Ohio attended Cleveland-Marshall. Enrollment at Cleveland-Marshall consists of nearly 500 full-time students and over 150 part-time students.

    Creighton University School of Law

    • The Creighton University School of Law, a Jesuit Catholic school, was championed by Rev. Michael Dowling and opened in October of 1904. When the school opened there were 23 law students taught by 31 attorneys who donated their time to the new school and the students. Presently 26 full-time and 27 part-time faculty provide instruction to almost 500 law students, and the school boasts a student to faculty ratio of 17-to-1.

    Drake University Law School

    • The Drake University Law School, located in Des Moines, Iowa, boasts that it is one of the 25 oldest law schools in the United States. The school has a diverse student population with women making up 45 percent of the student population, minorities representing 12 percent. The Drake website lists the statistic that within nine months after graduation nearly 95 percent of students have either become employed or go on to further study in graduate school.
