Brock University Courses in BACB

In 2007, Brock University's Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) graduate course program was accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). The school offers three degrees through its Centre for Disability Studies, but only two allow for the BACB-certified ABA specialty. To earn a Master of Art (MA) or Master of Applied Disability Studies (MADS) in ABA, five credits must be completed.
  1. Foundations in Applied Disability Studies and the Study of Exceptionality

    • Course number 5P00 is an advanced exploration through several disciplines of the history, philosophy and service of the disability field. It is a requirement for both degrees and a prerequisite for 5P50.

Principles and Processes of Applied Behaviour Analysis

    • This course, numbered 5P01, is also a requirement for both ABA degrees. Using everyday problems and clinical situations, it examines the scientific application of learning principles. This class is a prerequisite for 5P02.

    Applications of Applied Behaviour Analysis

    • A look at the strategies to change behavior and the support needed to do so is examined in 5P02. Also required for either ABA specialization, this course uses personal illustrations in addition to clinical and educational examples. It is a prerequisite for 5P12 and 5P42.

Quantitative Methods in Social Science Research in Applied Disability Studies

    • Course number 5P10 is a requirement only for the MA in ABA. It looks at methodology in relation to all ages using statistics and computer analysis.

Research Methods in Applied Behaviour Analysis

    • This course, required for both ABA degrees, is numbered 5P11. It examines experimental evaluations, use of behavioral data and ethics.

Assessment and Treatment Selection in Applied Behaviour Analysis

    • Course number 5P12 is required both degrees and looks at how interventions can be formed using different types of behavioral assessments. This is a prerequisite for 5P20.

Supervised Practicum in Applied Behaviour Analysis I

    • This course, numbered 5P20, is a practical application of the ABA techniques learned in previously. Required for both ABA degrees, the student is supervised in a preapproved setting with a Field Supervisor. A faculty member will coordinate with the Field Supervisor and meet regularly with the student. Four additional practica, 5P21-5P24, are suggested for students specializing in ABA.

Foundations in Applied Disability Studies and the Study of Exceptionality II

    • Required only for the MADS ABA degree, 5P50 is conducted under the supervision of a faculty member. The student will study a relevant topic and complete a formal assignment for the supervisor.

    MA Thesis and Research Project

    • Course 5F60 is the Thesis required of MA candidates and 5F65 is the Research Project MADS students must complete. The Thesis is an in-depth research project undertaken with the oversight of a faculty member and defended orally. 5P11 is a pre- or co-requisite. The Research Project is a lengthy paper illustrating independent thinking, work and research. The topic is chosen with and evaluated by a supervisor. A second faculty member also participates in the evaluation. Courses 5P00, 5P01, 5P02 and 5P11 are prerequisites for the project.

    Half-Credit Courses

    • For each ABA degree, a half-credit must be earned through one of 12 different courses. 5V80-5V89 are varying topics in Applied Disability Studies offered by different instructors. 5P42 is Dual Diagnosis II where assessment and intervention in both habilitative mental health and developmental disabilities are reviewed. The topics will vary. 5P90 is Directed Studies in Applied Behaviour Analysis and Applied Disability Studies. Similar to 5P50, the student will work under faculty supervision to study a topic and complete a formal assignment related to it.
