Courses in Hazardous waste management focus on laws and requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Courses include advanced hazardous waste management, land disposal restrictions, universal waste management and used oil and special waste. The Environmental Resource Center offers state-specific hazardous waste classes for the states of California and Texas.
In some circumstances, hazardous materials must be transported, and the laws of the Department of Transportation and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act must be followed. Courses emphasizing transportation laws include DOT hazardous materials training, RCRA informational training, and Air Transportation Association (IATA) dangerous goods regulations and compliance. These courses ready a hazardous materials worker to transport dangerous goods by air, land or sea.
The environmental concerns of a hazardous waste manager are top priority. The courses emphasizing environmental concerns cover numerous legislation and regulations around the world. There are courses covering the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), European Community Regulations on Chemicals and their Safety (REACH) and the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS).
Safety is the final training component in a hazardous management course. The safety of the environment, worker health, and society are emphasized in safety courses. Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response laws (HAZWOPER), and the regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are the focus of courses in safety. These courses will cover the laws, compliance, regulations and continuing compliance requirements for licensing in waste management.
