Amarillo College’s Mortuary Science program is dedicated to teaching students the basics of funeral direction. This includes knowing proper procedures when dealing with next of kin. This program is less intensive than others may be; it does not include any classes on embalming, body restoration, or other courses of that nature. Because of this, Amarillo College’s program is not accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education and graduates will not be eligible to take the National Board Exam. However, students can take what they learn and build upon it at a different school. Those who do complete the course are eligible to sit for the Texas State Board of Funeral Directing Exam.

The Mortuary Science program at Arapahoe Community College is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education. All the core courses of the physical campus’ mortuary courses are available online, so opting to complete the online degree will not leave you with less information than a physical campus would. When completing the online course for mortuary science, be aware that you will need to travel to the actual campus twice--once during the fall semester and once during the spring semester. This is so you can complete lab work required to become a licensed mortician. Once you complete the coursework, you will receive an Associate of Applied Science in Mortuary Science degree and earn eligibility to take the National Board Exam.

The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science considers itself at the forefront of new virtual distance learning technology, since you can receive a mortuary science degree from the comfort of your own home. The institute’s online courses are exactly the same as those offered in a physical classroom. The program is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education, as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Students in this program will be required to visit the physical campus for a period in order to complete lab work; the cost of this trip will be out of pocket and is not covered in tuition.
