Earning a master's degree in English can be accomplished without ever leaving home. There are many online programs where you can receive a quality education. Remember, any school that you're considering attending should be accredited by a reputable agency.
  1. Morehead State University

    • Morehead University in Kentucky is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The online master's degree program requires students to take 33 hours of courses in English and related subjects. Applicants must have majored or minored in English as an undergraduate and possess a 3.0 GPA in undergraduate English coursework. Applicants also need minimum scores of 400 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Tuition is $14,592.

    Northwestern State University of Louisiana

    • NSULA offers a 30-hour program that consists of 24 course credit hours and six credit hours for the thesis. The online program does not offer concentrations and coursework includes British and American literature and writing or linguistics. You may opt out of the thesis by writing two papers. Prospective students must have an undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or better, a bachelor's degree in English or an equivalent, six hours of a foreign language and a critical writing sample. Tuition for the program is $2,072 for nine semester credit hours, plus a $50 electronic learning course fee for each class and a $3,343 out-of-state fee, if applicable.

    Minnesota State University, Mankato

    • The Minnesota State University, Mankato offers a master's degree in English with a technical communication specialization. The program can be completed online in about two years, depending on how many hours you take per semester. The thesis plan is 30 credit hours and the alternate paper plan is 34. You must have 28 quarter or 18 semester hours in mass communications, literature, linguistics or speech to qualify for the program. The specialization in technical communication will prepare you for a future in technical writing and editing, teaching or further graduate studies. Taking the program online qualifies you for the in-state tuition rate, which is $2,997 per semester for nine credit hours.
