Online English Programs

Whether you enjoy reading, feel you've got the next bestseller inside your head or envision a career in which you share your love of words and language with young students, a major in the English field may be a good match. English majors cover topics such as creative writing, literature, theory and criticism, and degrees in the field are available online at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  1. University of Illinois at Springfield

    • Earn a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Illinois at Springfield, even if you don't live anywhere near the school through the college's online program. Only 20 students a year are accepted into the online program, which was created for students who have already earned an associate degree in English. Courses in the two-year program include introduction to writing poetry, rhetoric and college writing, modern British literature, major women writers, native American women's literature and culture, literature between the wars, African-American literature and the British romantics.

      Along with the associate degree or 30 hours of undergraduate course work, applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0, including two literature courses with a grade of "C" or better. A statement of interest is also required. Students must have a high speed Internet connection, sound card, headset, video card, 1GB RAM and 1.5 GHz processor.

    Regent University

    • The Regent University Bachelor of Arts in English program includes classes in contemporary American literature, communication skills, the art of the essay, Shakespeare, the religious imagination in American literature, creative writing, British romantics, Victorian literature and Shakespeare. The four-year program also includes general core required classes such as biology, history and introduction to psychology. The English degree is offered at both Regent's standard campus and through a complete online program.

      Regent University is a Christian college, but there are no religious affiliation requirements for admission. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED (Regent states that the average accepted student had a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.2). Other application materials include SAT/ACT scores and a personal essay about how the student plans to become a Christian leader. Students must have an Internet connection, instant message program and other computer accessories per class.

    Western Governors University

    • Take your study of English further with a Master of Arts in English Language Learning and English as a Second Language (ELL/ESL) for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students. Western Governors University's online graduate program is aimed at currently licensed teachers who want to add ELL/ESL to their resume. The program, which may be completed in three years, includes classes in theories of second language learning acquisition and grammar, instructional design analysis, foundations of research, education without borders, culture, issues in educational research and assessment theory and practice. Students complete a final capstone/research project. All online students receive a mentor.

      Candidates may be interested to know that Western Governors is the only online teacher education facility in the country to receive accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in the teaching or education field, current state licensing and submit to a criminal background check. A telephone intake interview is also required. Students require an Internet connection, email address and various hardware/software peripherals dictated per class.
