All of the Clayton College of Natural Health's degrees, which include a bachelor of science and a master's of science in holistic nutrition, are offered through online and distance learning. Students use traditional textbooks and study guides, but assignments and tests are completed online. In 1980, Clayton College of Natural Health was started as an offshoot of a herb company. The bachelor's program is designed for students with a high school diploma or G.E.D., and the master's program is meant for students who already have a bachelor's degree.

Hawthorn Health & Nutrition Institute offers a master of science in holistic nutrition that can be earned online. The program uses audio lectures, traditional textbooks, journals, web sites, software for diet analysis, clinical conference calls, message boards, hands-on assignments and community assignments as educational tools for the program, which also includes teacher-student interaction. Founded at the end of 2002, Hawthorn Health & Nutrition Institute is approved by the California Bureau for Private Post-Secondary Education to operate educational programs in holistic health.

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition offers a one-year, online, certificate program to prepare students for careers in holistic nutrition. Each student receives a customized iPod loaded with audio and video, books, DVDs, handouts, and the Online Education Forum (OEF), where students can start classes as well as interact with students and teachers. Each student also has their own personalized web site that can be customized to better suit their learning needs.
