Rowan University Nutrition Degrees

Specialist nutrition courses are becoming increasingly popular, thanks to a growing public interest in health and wellbeing. Degrees in nutrition or related subjects can qualify students for careers as dietitians, personal consultants or fitness trainers, either in a freelance capacity or for a company or local health body.
  1. Rowan University

    • Rowan University is a public university, situated in the city of Glassboro, New Jersey. Though founded in 1923, it remained a specialist teacher-training college for several years before developing into a multipurpose institution in the 1970s. As of 2010, the university has almost 10,000 undergraduates, as well as 1,300 postgraduates, and nearly 900 staff members.

    Courses

    • Rowan University does not offer nutrition on its own as either a major or a minor. There are, however, several programs in the College of Education that include this aspect of physical health.

The university's Health Promotion and Fitness Management program, for example, is geared toward training a new generation of "wellness assistants." Voted the best undergraduate program in the whole of America by the Association for Worksite Health Promotion, the course gives students training in encouraging others to pursue a healthy lifestyle, whether this is through changing their diet, exercising more, or changing their mental outlook.

Meanwhile, the Health and Physical Education program offered by Rowan University combines health education with parts of physical education training. Among the modules that can be taken are Basic Nutrition and Consumer Health Decisions.

    Admission Requirements

    • Admissions to Rowan University are assessed individually, according to academic achievements and potential, as well as extra-curricular factors.

As a minimum, prospective students must have completed at least 16 college-preparatory units in high school, with at least four of the these in English and two in languages. All applications must include your SAT or ACT score, class ranks, and several letters of recommendation.

Meanwhile, if you are home-schooled, you will need to submit SAT or ACT scores, with these to be submitted directly from an accredited testing agency, along with two letters of recommendation.

    Career Prospects

    • According to the university's College of Education, its graduates work in a range of fields relating to nutrition and general physical wellbeing. These include corporate jobs helping companies keep their employees in top physical condition, jobs within the community, and clinical positions.

Graduates also go on to take higher-level degrees in more specialist subjects, including physical and occupational therapy.
