Based in Littleton Colorado, Arapahoe Community College provides two-year associate degree and certificate training in more than 100 programs. The mortuary science course is designed to prepare students for careers as mortuary science practitioners, funeral directors and embalmers. The course is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE). Course highlights in mortuary science include anatomy and physiology, interpersonal communication, funeral directing and consulting and embalming theory. In addition taking coursework, students are required to complete a funeral service internship. After completing the required coursework, students must take a national board examination before receiving their degree in mortuary science.

Located in New York City, AAMI was founded in 1926 and houses the Academy of Embalming and Mortuary Research. The associate degree in funeral service runs for 12 to 16 months. Students have the option of taking the program either online or in a classroom format. The online course is provided on a part-time basis. The requirement to complete both the online and classroom training consists of 69 credit hours of coursework. Online students are required to take the clinical portion of their coursework, comprising restorative art and embalming, during the last two weeks of their training at a physical site affiliated with AAMI.

PIMS awards online diplomas in embalming and funeral directing. In addition, the institute also provides specialized associate business degree programs in funeral service management and an associate degree in funeral service arts and sciences. All of the programs are accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education. The 12-month embalming and funeral-directing program consists of coursework in basic health sciences, business and professional studies, behavioral and social sciences and legal, ethical and regulatory topics related to mortuary science.
