Correspondence Courses in Surgical Technology

Surgical technology refers to the safe and effective management of the operating room environment, including patient care, sterilization techniques and equipment maintenance. Surgical technologists work in a fast-paced environment under the supervision of medical surgeons and registered nurses to ensure that surgical procedures are implemented to the highest possible standard. There are several accredited schools in the United States that offer surgical technology courses through correspondence, also referred to as distance education or online learning.

    • Southeast Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in surgical technology through online distance education. Course topics include surgical procedures and techniques, the fundamentals of surgical technology, surgical asepsis and sterilization, patient care and clinical procedures. Students must also complete on-site clinical training at various health care facilities throughout Lincoln, Nebraska.

    Kirkwood Community College

    • Kirkwood Community College offers a 12-month diploma program in surgical technology in conjunction with Hawkeye Community College, Indian Hills Community College, Northeast Iowa Community College and Southeastern Community College. Coursework in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and introductory management are available through online distance learning. The remaining course requirements, including hands-on laboratory training, are held at the above partner colleges and local hospitals.

    Stevens-Henager College

    • Stevens-Henager College offers an Associate of Occupational Studies with a major in surgical technology that may be completed within 20 months of study. Coursework is delivered in a format that utilizes online distance learning and personalized one-on-one academic advising. Course topics include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, infection control and microbiology, surgical sterilization, surgical instrumentation and procedures, patient care and surgical interventions. A professional external internship at a local area hospital is also required. Stevens-Henager College has campus locations in both Idaho and Utah.

    • Laramie County Community College, in conjunction with Sheridan College, offers a hybrid distance education program in surgical technology. Students take prerequisite courses through online learning and receive clinical training at affiliated hospitals throughout the state of Wyoming.

    Gulf Coast Community College

    • Gulf Coast Community College offers an accelerated bridge program in surgical technology through distance education. This program is designed for graduates of non-accredited training programs or military-trained surgical technologists who wish to prepare for the certification examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). A two-semester First Assistant certificate program in surgical technology is also available through distance education for registered nurses. Coursework is delivered through independent correspondence study using online materials and computerized testing.
