The University of California -- San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry is the western United States' oldest dental school and is divided into separate departments such as the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences. UCSF is a four-year school, and the school of dentistry offers Doctor of Dental Surgery as well as Ph.D. degrees. The school operates 14 dental clinics and is home to the Center for Craniofacial Anomalies.

The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry at the University of the Pacific, also in San Francisco, offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and also has programs in oral and maxillofacial surgery and dental hygiene. A graduate program is also available in orthodontics. A fast-track dental surgery degree program is offered and allows students to earn degrees in three years rather than four, and the dental hygiene program takes less than two years. The school operates 14 clinics and is home to the Craniofacial Research Instrumentation Laboratory.

Located in California's capital city, Sacramento City College is a community college that offers associate of science degree programs in dental hygiene and dental assisting. The dental assisting program takes just more than a year and teaches students to work with dentists to treat patients, to assist with restorations, to take X-rays and to provide preventive services. The dental hygiene program is two years--contingent on several prerequisite courses--and teaches students to be educators to their patients on the topic of oral hygiene and to be clinicians who work with dentists to provide preventive and therapeutic care.
