Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) work around the clock to help those in emergency situations such as accidents or sudden illness. An EMT can work in a variety of environments, such as ambulance companies, fire departments and hospitals, and at special events, such as sports or movie production. California offers a variety of opportunities for people interested in this line of work to gain the education required.
  1. California EMS Academy

    • The California EMS Academy provides courses and training for a wide variety of emergency medical services, including first responder, CPR, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support as well as paramedic (EMT-P) and emergency medical technician (EMT-B). Their EMT-P course focuses on pre-hospital patient assessment and intervention at an advanced life support level. The course includes 1,120 hours of classroom education and field training. Total cost for this course is $13,000 (as of May 2010). The academy also offers a 64-hour pre-paramedic course. The 150-hour EMT-B course covers the basic training and education in patient assessment, airway management, proper usage of an automatic external defibrillator and stabilization.

    San Francisco Paramedic Association

    • The San Francisco Paramedic Association trains prospective EMTs to respond to various emergency medical situations such as providing care to accident victims or those affected by sudden illness. Students are taught by paramedics and EMTs in a small class size environment. Classes are offered in San Francisco, Fremont and Berkeley. The San Francisco location offers two different summer course options; the other two locations offer spring and fall courses.

    Fast Response School of Health Care Education

    • The Fast Response School of Health Care Education offers opportunities for those interested in becoming EMTs. Its five-week training course focuses on developing skills in managing emergencies, such as bleeding and fractures, patient assessment, airway obstruction, cardiac arrest and emergency childbirth. The school offers classroom education, role playing and internships in the emergency room and with EMTs. Fast Response also offers courses for those already certified but needing recertification credits for their license, allowing those already in the field to refresh their skills and expand their knowledge.
