While an undergraduate degree in education is not needed to apply to an education administration graduate program, most universities will require a bachelor's degree from an accredited school, a certain undergraduate grade-point average and satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Applicants may also need to supply references, essays and possibly submit to interviews before acceptance.
Students pursuing a degree or certificate in education administration take courses in school leadership, theories and practice in education administration, current issues and trends in education, diversity and cultural awareness, school law and finance. They also may participate in research courses or methodology courses. The goal of these courses is to create a critical-thinking school leader who has good communication and strategic-planning skills and who will be able to work well within her city and community.
Students pursuing a degree in education administration will be required to take a field placement or internship class. This internship will involve the student working with a current leader in the education field to use skills learned in the classroom setting. Working as a principal or school leader under the guidance of a supportive and experienced mentor can be the most valuable component of the student's learning opportunity.
Many universities and colleges offer degrees in education administration. These schools may offer part-time options, which allow students to hold jobs or take care of family while finishing their degrees in three or four years. Full-time students obtain their degrees in two years or less, but in taking the required credit hours students may not be able to hold a job during the school year. Many schools offer online and distance-education options, enabling students to earn their degrees from home without needing to relocate.
Once a degree in education administration is earned, the graduate can obtain a job as a principal, assistance principal, chief academic officer, academic dean or dean of students, director of financial aid, registrar or superintendent. Jobs can be in the public or private sectors, and graduates can work in elementary or secondary schools, colleges and other institutions of higher learning.
