List of Pre-Med Universities in TN

Pre-medicine undergraduate degree courses allow you to study all of the necessary classes to help you embark on a career in medicine. Pre-medicine programs will consist of biology, chemistry, physics and math courses, among others, to provide a strong scientific knowledge base. Pre-medical courses will also help you prepare for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). A good MCAT score and GPA are necessary to gain entry to medical school.
  1. Cumberland University

    • Cumberland University is a small private college of around 1,000 undergraduates. Full-time tuition fees were $8,265 per semester in 2009/10, although there are plenty of opportunities for financial aid. Cumberland University offers a pre-medical program involving one year of English composition, one year of biology, one year of physics, two years of chemistry and 52 hours of electives. Admissions requirements include a minimum 21 composite ACT score or a 980/990 SAT Critical Reading and Mathematics combined score and a GPA of 3.00 or higher.

    Hiwassee College

    • Hiwassee College is a small private college of fewer than 2,000 undergraduates, affiliated with the United Methodist Church. In 2008-9, the cost for tuition and board was $20,330 a year. The pre-medicine program at Hiwassee College involves five biology classes, four chemistry classes, two classes each of physics and math as well as social science electives. Admission requirements include a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher, a class rank in the upper two-thirds of your high school graduating class, and a composite score of 18 or higher on the ACT exam or a total of 1500 or higher on the SAT exam.

    Lipscomb University

    • Lipscomb University is a private, co-educational, liberal arts college associated with the Churches of Christ. It currently has more than 2,000 undergraduates and tuition is $10,330 per semester. However, around 95% of current students receive some form of financial aid. The suggested first year curriculum for pre-medical studies at Lipscomb University includes biology, chemistry, math, English and electives. A composite score of 27 or higher on the ACT exam or a total of 1230 or higher on the SAT exam is required. As part of the admissions process, an academic evaluation must be completed by a teacher or professor and all students must have an interview before being admitted.

    Tusculum College

    • Tusculum College is a co-educational private college of around 2000 undergraduates affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Fees for tuition and board are currently $27,920, but 97% of students receive some form of financial aid. At Tusculum College, students can study for a pre-medicine Bachelor of Arts degree, where the curriculum focuses on biology, chemistry and physics. Students are required to have a 19 composite ACT score to be considered for unconditional admission.
