Southern University Shreveport offers a basic emergency medical technician program. Students will take 21 credit hours of classroom and clinical studies. Coursework will cover basic emergency care, life support, CPR, assessing patients, trauma, how to manage airways, spinal packing, how to operate an ambulance and automated external defibrillation. The program is only offered during the spring term. Graduates receive a Certificate of Technical Studies. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and have taken the ACT.

Nunez Community College offers two emergency medical technician programs, both of which include classroom and clinical instruction. The EMT basic course requires seven credit hours for completion. Applicants must submit a high school transcript or GED diploma. Students will learn CPR, airway obstruction, how to identify hazardous materials, scene control, and equipment and vehicle operation. The EMT paramedic programs can be completed in three semesters after students take 32 credit hours. They must be CPR certified and have already completed a basic or intermediate EMT program and two biology classes to be admitted to this program. Coursework includes patient assessment, operations, airway management and cardiac, obstetrics, pediatrics and trauma emergencies. Basic program graduates will receive Technical Competency Area Certification and EMT paramedic graduates will receive a Certificate of Technical Studies.

L.E. Fletcher Community College offers a basic EMT program in which students learn to treat patients in medical emergencies before they go to a hospital. Students will spend 165 hours in classroom and clinical instruction. Clinics take place in emergency departments. Classes include intro to basic EMT, how to assess patients and manage airways, maternity, pediatrics, trauma and behavior emergencies. Program applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and take the ACT. Graduates will receive a certificate.

Bossier Parish Community College has programs for basic EMT and EMT paramedic, which include classroom and in-the-field studies. Interested applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and take the ACT. Basic graduates will receive a Technical Competency Certification and paramedic graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree. The one semester basic program includes coursework in basic emergency medicine, including life support. The EMT paramedic program takes two years to earn the associate's degree. Prerequisites include completion of an EMT basic course and anatomy and physiology classes. Students will also take general education support classes such as college algebra, speech and medical terminology. Program coursework includes airway ventilation, trauma treatment, operations and special considerations.
