International Humanitarian Law Schools

International humanitarian law is an area of law that is focused on protecting individuals from war and unnecessary armed conflict. The L.L.M. (Master of Legal Studies) or J.D. (Juris Doctor) degree is offered in this field among law schools throughout the nation. In addition to offering degrees, many schools also partake in humanitarian law projects, organizations and research.

    • American University's Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C., is the home of famous alumni like Alice Paul, who wrote the original Equal Rights Amendment, and Senator Robert Byrd, who served eight consecutive six-year terms for West Virginia. The school maintains a global focus, as students are enrolled from across the globe, and 92 different languages and dialects are spoken there.

      The L.L.M. degree with a specialization in international human rights law is available through the International Legal Studies Program. Students must complete 24 credits (16 can be related to specialization), two required courses and two research paper writing assignments.

    Northwestern University

    • Northwestern University's Law School has received consistently high rankings from several sources, including "U.S News & World Report," which ranked the school as the 11th best law school in the country in 2010. Northwestern Law was also placed in the number one slot of the percentage of graduates hired by the "National Law Journal" in February 2010.

      The school offers the L.L.M. program and the joint J.D.-L.L.M. program in international human rights. The L.L.M. program include five core classes, nine credits of international human rights law and nine additional elective courses in areas like refugees, women and children, Israeli issues or environmental law. The J.D.-L.L.M. program awards both degrees through a four-year curriculum and a semester-long externship through an international human rights organization. According to the school's website, this is the only law school in the country to offer this program.

    Harvard University

    • Harvard Law School is one of the most prestigious law institutes in the county. According to the school's website, it is the oldest law school in the country that is still operating and has produced influential and high-ranking graduates such as U.S. supreme court justices, governors and federal judges. The J.D. program offers the Law and Social Change program of study with a focus in international human rights. Students in the program are required to complete foundation course work; intermediate course work (which is when a focus can be chosen); capstone opportunities including seminars and research-based projects; and fellowships.
