The Lewis and Clark College Law School in Portland, OR, has for years prided itself on its strong program in environmental law. The JD program provides a certificate in Environmental and Natural Resource Law for students who want to focus on environmental law, and also offers an LL.M. program for lawyers who want to further their knowledge of and formal training in environmental law. American University's Program on International and Comparative Environmental Law was founded in part by the Center for International Environmental Law. It pairs students with environmental law professionals and promotes the study of global environmental issues involving the World Bank. The school's summer program takes students to Europe for the further study of environmental law and international institutions responsible for promoting sustainable development.

Vermont Law School offers a legal education focused on the most pressing issues in environmental law, particularly those with a global impact. The U.S.--China Partnership for Environmental Law is a collaboration between Vermont Law School and Sun Yat-Sen University in China that was started to increase knowledge and intellectual concern for environmental law in China with the goal of boosting the academic infrastructure needed to address environmental and energy issues in China. Vermont Law School also boasts the largest graduate environmental program of any law school in the United States.

The University of California at Berkeley was one of the first law schools in the nation to offer a program in environmental law. They put out the "Ecology Law Quarterly," one of the most-read environmental law journals in the nation. Courses in international environmental law are offered, and the school awards a specialized certificate in environmental law to JD students whose course of study emphasizes law and the environment.
