The international humanitarian law course at the University of Minnesota is offered to students as an elective in the second year of their law degree. The program offers an overview of primary legal regimes. Pupils learn to analyze treaty documents; access recent developments to international criminal court; analyze jurisprudence and become familiar with humanitarian theoretical concepts.
The American University Washington College of Law offers a program on international law as part of the advanced studies of human rights and international law degree. The program teaches students the rules and principles of regulating international armed conflict and humanitarian law in the development of restraints in armed conflict. Students have access to a law library between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Humanitarian law of armed conflicts focuses on the limits and potential of the law governing the conflict of hostilities. The international human rights and humanitarian law scholarship seminar gives students the opportunity to produce a scholarly piece of work focusing on international humanitarian law. This course is aimed at pupils who wish to pursue an academic career.
Humanitarian law can also be studied as part of the law of war course program at the University of Virginia School of Law. Conflicts in Afghanistan, the Hague Accords of 1899 and 1907, and international war tribunals are discussed. Students attend faculty workshops run by visiting academics from other universities. Faculty analyze scholarly papers and advise pupils.
The master's degree program in conflict and dispute resolution at the University of Oregon includes an elective course on humanitarianism. Studies focus on understanding the implications of conflict and the nature and roots of conflict. Students learn to broaden their perspective on conflict and conflict management as well as develop their own research and theory. Pupils may undertake internships throughout the program.
