Most universities provide a number of grants and scholarships through their financial aid office. The College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University offers several student grants, including the Ellis-Gibbs Memorial Scholarship for women entering the field of criminal law. Applicants must have outstanding grades and maintain a 3.0 grade point average. You must apply before February 15. For information on grant amounts contact the financial aid office.

Just as women have been traditionally underrepresented in criminal law, so too have minorities. The Black Women Lawyers Association provides scholarships to African-American women who intend to practice law in California. The award varies in amount, and is based on financial need, community service and achievement in school.

Many scholarships are provided by law firms. The Diversity Scholarship, offered by the Lane Powell law firm, is available to women and minorities who will practice law in Seattle or Portland. Applicants must provide a writing sample, cover letter, resume, references and transcripts. Grant applications must be submitted by September 10, and are awarded in the amount of $7,500.
