California Distance Law Degrees

The demand for online classes in higher education increased by over 70 percent from 2009 to 2010, according to a Sloan Consortium study conducted by J. Seaman and E. Allen. Online degrees in law are a rarity. However, in the state of California, some institutions have been authorized grant law degrees through an online distance education format.
  1. Northwestern California University

    • Northwestern California University (NCU) offers online law studies through its school of law. The Juris Doctor (J.D.) program has been registered with the California State Bar Association, the association that regulates law degrees of all types in the state. No classroom instruction is required by the NCU program. Instead, students are expected to complete four years of full-time study as mandated by the bar association. The association maintains that this full-time study should consist of a minimum of 864 clock hours to be completed within 48 to 52 weeks of study. The school offers three programs of study: a Bachelor of Science in Law (B.S.L.), a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and a paralegal studies certificate.
