The George Washington University Law School was the first law school to become established in the District of Columbia. Educating future attorneys for more than 145 years, the school offers more than 250 elective courses. The school offers the following specialty programs: business and finance law, environmental law, government procurement law, intellectual property law, international and comparative law, litigation and dispute resolution, and national security and U.S. foreign relations law.

Howard University, a historically African-American college, has been educating future attorneys since 1869 with a focus on providing legal education for minority groups. Approved by the American Bar Association, Howard University's School of Law provides a number of real-life legal experiences. Among the co-curricular activities are three moot court teams (trial advocacy, appellate advocacy and international) and a number of clinical law center programs, including civil rights, alternative dispute resolution, criminal justice, fair housing, equal justice, intellectual property and trademark, and investor justice and education.
