How do I Attempt Analytical MCQs in the GRE Test?

Graduate Records Exam (GRE) scores are required to apply for admission to many graduate programs in the United States. The multiple choice questions (MCQs) in the verbal section of the GRE are designed to test analytical reasoning ability, as well as vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. Once you have prepared for the GRE, certain strategies can be used on test day to improve the chances of correctly answering a question you aren't sure about. These strategies are slightly different for each of the four types of verbal questions: analogies, antonyms, sentence completions and reading comprehension.

Instructions

  1. Analogy MCQs

    • 1

Create a sentence which explains how the two words in the first analogy relate to each other.

    • 2

Eliminate any answers in which the pair of words clearly do not relate to each other in the same way as the words in the example pair do.

    • 3

Choose the pair of words from among the remaining answers which could be substituted in your sentence for the example words. Pick the closest answer if none of the words are an exact fit.

    Antonym MCQs

    • 4

Define the word given in the question.

    • 5

Eliminate answers which have definitions similar to that of the given word or which do not relate to the given word.

    • 6

Pick the remaining answer which is most nearly the opposite of the given word.

    Sentence Completion MCQs

    • 7

Determine the sentence's intended meaning by reading carefully and thoroughly.

    • 8

Determine the word or words that could fill the blanks in the sentence.

    • 9

Eliminate any answers which clearly do not match the meaning of the words you have chosen.

    • 10

Choose the answer which most closely matches the word or words you have chosen to fill in the missing part of the sentence.

    Reading Comprehension MCQs

    • 11

Examine the reading passage to determine the main idea and important sub-ideas in the passage.

    • 12

Determine which information in the reading passage is needed to answer the question. SparkNotes' GRE Test Prep guide lists the main purpose of the passage, the purpose of details given in the passage, organization, tone and implied information as the main types of reading comprehension questions.

    • 13

Formulate your own answer to the question. Skim relevant parts of the reading passage again, if necessary, to verify your answer.

    • 14

Pick the multiple choice answer which most closely matches your own answer.
