Determine if you meet the educational and professional application requirements. Most schools require a current RN license for the state in which you will be studying, a four-year bachelor's degree and a master's degree in nursing. You will also be expected to have at least one year of direct work experience as a nurse.
Complete and return all application forms. Application forms give programs a general overview of your background and experiences. You will be asked about your educational history, work experience and areas of specialty. When returning the application form, be sure to include all applicable fees. Schools usually charge between $50 and $75 per application.
Compile a resume or CV for your application. Make the resume a comprehensive overview of you experiences in nursing. List only relevant information and highlight any educational or professional achievements.
Write a personal statement or essay. The topic of the essay will vary from school to school and some might not even require this step. If you are expected to write an essay, know that this is your best chance to show the school who you are as an individual. Advocate for yourself using a strong and authoritative voice without being condescending or arrogant.
Include official transcripts from your Master's in Nursing program. Post-master's programs want to see strong performance with high marks. At these programs, you are expected to already be an expert in your field. If you have several B's or anything lower, check to see if you can re-take any courses to strengthen your application.
Obtain letters of recommendation. They should come from professors or colleagues who know you well and can speak to your expertise and potential to succeed in a certification program. Include all letters in signed and sealed envelopes, in your application packet, if not submitted online.
After receiving your application, the admissions committee will review all aspects of it. They will then determine if you will be a good fit for the program. If they think you have the potential to succeed, you will be invited for an interview. Use this opportunity as a last chance to clarify any weaknesses in your application, reiterate why it is the program for you and ask lingering program specific questions. After interviewing, you will be notified within several weeks if you have been accepted into the program. If accepted, pay all applicable tuition and fees.
