Use the ABCD method to begin writing the course objective. Write down each section of the method and create a statement by each. For example, A is for audience and your course audience is Bachelor of Science nursing students.
Think about the behavior component of the ABCD method and write down two to three things that students will learn in the course. Include a behavior each student is expected to demonstrate. An example of an observable behavior could be: "Learners will demonstrate advanced-level critical thinking by knowing medical terminology from A to F."
Write the condition section and include "how" and in what way will students use what was learned. For example, one condition you could write would be: "Nursing students will be expected to use a stethoscope and blood pressure gauge."
Develop the degree requirements of the course description and describe "to what degree" knowledge learned during this course will be measured. An example statement of this could be, "Nursing students will demonstrate mastery of the anatomy of the female body." However, using percentage terms in degree statements is also allowed. "Students will demonstrate 80% knowledge of medical terms and 20% knowledge of triage techniques."
Compile the ABCD statements into one paragraph. Consider using bulleted list that include a beginning statement such as: "Nursing students will learn..." Using bulleted points is effective; however, placing emphasis on student learning outcomes is important.
