Ridgetown College Veterinary Technician Requirements

Ridgetown College is part of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. The college focuses on agricultural education and offers two veterinary technology diplomas: one for conventional delivery and the other for alternative delivery. The alternative course has some distance learning modules, while the conventional program takes place entirely at the college. Both versions take 2 years to complete.
  1. OSSD

    • OSSD stands for Ontario Secondary School Diploma, which students receive when they meet the credit requirements on completion of high school. Diplomas made up of the old and new curriculum for the OSSD are both accepted by Ridgetown College. Students who do not have an OSSD can still gain acceptance with an equivalent diploma.

    Current Curriculum Grades

    • High school students must gain credits in specific courses towards their OSSD. You need grade 11C or U biology, 12C or U English, 11U or 12C chemistry and 12U math or 12C MTC4C or MAPC math. You must achieve at least 65 percent in all C level courses and at least 60 percent in all U level courses.

    Old Curriculum Grades

    • Students who completed high school in the old school curriculum need credits in grade 11 chemistry and math, and grade 12 English; all at advanced level. To gain acceptance onto the veterinary technician course, you need a score of at least 65 percent in all advance level classes. If you only have general level credits in grade 11 chemistry and math, and grade 12 English, you must have a score of at least 80 percent.

    Pre-Admissions Test

    • Ridgetown College holds a pre-admissions test for all students who meet its academic requirements. This test is held every February in the year you will begin the course. For example, students wishing to enroll for the fall semester in 2011 will take the test in February 2011. You need to register for the Veterinary Technology pre-admission test through Ridgetown College's website. The registration form allows you to choose your test date. As of 2010, the test fee cost 50 Canadian dollars. The website contains sample questions, so you can get an idea of what to expect.

    Work Experience

    • All students entering the veterinary technology program in the upcoming fall semester need to complete work experience by August 1 in the year they will begin their course. You must work or volunteer with a veterinarian at a clinic or hospital for at least 40 hours. The veterinarian must complete a work experience form for you and send it to Ridgetown College's Registrar's Office.
