How to Send TOEFL Scores

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required by many colleges and universities for applicants whose native language is not English. The TOEFL is offered in both online versions (the TOEFL IBT, or "internet based test") and conventional paper versions (PBT, "paper based test"). Scores are sent directly from the TOEFL administration to the institutions of your choice, and TOEFL also maintains a database of schools that accept the TOEFL and what scores are required at those institutions.

Things You'll Need

  • Testing fee (varies from country to country, approximately $200)
  • Additional score report fee ($17 for each report after the first four)

Register for the TOEFL test by selecting your testing location and following the direction. You will receive a TOEFL IBT account when you register, which includes your personalized login (ETS ID). The Internet-based format is not available in all locations.

Select your destination schools during the registration process. A comprehensive listing of schools that accept TOEFL is available. You may choose up to four schools at this time, and score reports will be mailed out directly to these schools. If you take the test in the United States and apply to schools in the United States, allow seven to ten days for the reports to arrive; allow approximately four weeks for other countries. You will also receive a fifth copy for your own records.

Complete the TOEFL IBT Official Score Report Request Form to request additional copies of your TOEFL score. This may be done through your IBT account, or by downloading the form and faxing it to 610-290-8972 (credit card only), or mail it with a personal check or money order to the address on the form. Online orders are processed within seven business days; mail and fax orders are mailed out within two weeks of receipt.
