How to Register for a New York State College From Your Own County

With improvements in information technology and the spread of the Internet over the last two decades, many governmental and business institutions, including New York state colleges, have created information databases and interactive online tools to serve their members and customers. At a minimum, most New York state colleges maintain electronic copies of student applications and registration forms for download to your home computer, wherever it may be located. Some also provide the ability to submit your completed forms electronically, rather than through the mail.

Instructions

To register for a New York state college from your own county, first navigate to the college's website. If you do not know the college's Internet address, you can access a directory of accredited New York colleges and universities maintained by the New York State Office of Higher Education (see References section). After accessing your chosen college's homepage, navigate to the admissions section of the website. Read through the information to familiarize yourself with the college's admissions procedures and requirements. In most cases, student registration for colleges in New York is limited to those students who have successfully passed through the application process. Therefore, your registration must be initiated by completing and submitting an application.

Visit the college's student application page, which is generally accessible from the admissions page. You may have to first select your level of study -- undergraduate, graduate or doctorate. Read all preparation instructions and make a list of any documents that are required for completion of the application. Make special note of the application deadlines. Generally, the deadlines are set according to the school term in which you plan to begin classes.

    • 3

Complete your application. If the college accepts applications electronically, you may have to register a username before accessing the application tool. Most colleges have applications available for printing if you prefer to mail a hard copy of the completed form to the admissions office. Note that you will likely have to pay an application fee. If your application is accepted, the college will send you a notice of acceptance and an invitation to register as a student.

Complete the registration procedure as outlined in your registration invitation. You will likely have the option of returning a registration form through the mail or completing the registration procedures online.
