Sheridan College Requirements

Sheridan College, a community college based in Sheridan, Wyoming, is part of the North Wyoming Community College District. As a community-based college, incoming students can choose associate degrees in nursing, welding, diesel technology, business or medical transcription. The college also offers certificate and vocational training in a number of specializations. Students can also earn a four-year degree through the distance learning program or can transition through the college to an accredited four-year program at another university. Though Sheridan College's admissions requirements are fairly lenient, incoming students must satisfy certain requirements in order to gain acceptance.
  1. General Admission

    • General admission to Sheridan College is quite fundamental. Applicants must be 16 years of age with a high school diploma or GED certificate. If they're still in high school, they can can apply to the college with written approval from their principals in order to take courses. Additionally, some high school students may attend Sheridan College, finish high school requirements and earn college credits at the same time. Sheridan College makes a determination to accept students who wish to finish high school on a case by case basis.

    School of Nursing

    • Nursing school applicants must submit all materials by March 1.

      In addition to submitting a general admission application, nursing school applicants must submit a completed nursing school application along with a certified copy of a high school transcript and/or a GED certificate. If the applicant has attended other colleges, he should arrange to have certified copies of transcripts forwarded to Sheridan College School of Nursing. Applicants must submit all materials by March 1 to be considered for the fall class.

      Students admitted to the program are accepted on a conditional basis. During their conditional probation, they must pass and earn a certain grade point, must pass a health exam, a drug test, a background search and a course in CPR for health care providers. Additionally, students must submit proof of immunization and an insurance certificate of liability. Finally, because some nursing school courses have prerequisites, nursing school students are expected to complete and pass those prerequisites before they apply to the nursing program.

    Admission to Dental Hygiene Program

    • Sheridan College's School of Dental Hygiene is highly competitive and admits just 24 students each year.

      With just 24 spots per fall class, Sheridan College's School of Dental Hygiene is highly competitive. To be considered for admission into this program, potential students must submit a completed Dental Hygiene Program admission application and a completed general admission application. In addition, they must send a certified copy of their high school transcript or a GED certificate, if it applies. If the student attended another college, she should have that college's transcripts sent to Sheridan as well. Finally, applicants must take the HOBET aptitude test before they apply. This test is designed to test skills required for health care professionals. Made up of 60 questions, the 2-1/2-hour exam tests an applicant's academic, critical and analytical skills. Applicants must submit all materials to the Dental Hygiene Program department by February 15, in order to be considered for the fall class.

      Like Sheridan's Nursing School, some core courses in the Dental Hygiene program have prerequisites. Applicants who are applying to this department must complete those prerequisites with a minimum 2.75 grade point average before they apply to the program.

    International Students

    • International students are encouraged to apply to Sheridan College. Admission requirements are similar to those of General Admission, except students must take an Official TOEFL test offered through Educational Testing Services. The TOEFL test assesses fluency in English and is one of the sole indicators used for U.S. citizens who wish to study abroad and for international students who wish to attend U.S. colleges and universities. For Sheridan College, acceptable scores must exceed 61 on the Internet-based test or 500 on the paper-based test.

      In addition to completing the general application, international students must provide a high school transcript translated into English. For transcripts from other international colleges, transcripts must be sent through WES (World Education Service). Other documentation must include a Confidential Financial Statement, signed and stamped by a bank official, and proof of immunizations.
