Top German Universities

Germany is the home of several prominent universities. Some of the oldest and most historic colleges in Europe are found in Germany. Along with France and England, Germany has long been at the center of Europe's prestigious intellectual tradition. The Times Higher Education Supplement rated universities worldwide. In the ratings for 2009, they placed eight German universities in the top-200.
  1. Technical University of Munich

    • The Technical University of Munich (TU Munich) is Germany's top-rated university. The Times Supplement rated TU Munich as the 55th highest-rated university in the world. The university is composed of 13 separate faculties and enrolls over 23,000 students each year. Of the thirteen faculties, it is the faculties of teacher education, engineering, economics, the sciences and medicine that are the most prominent. Aside from its well-known faculties, the university is also well-known for its interdisciplinary approach to research and education. The university is the home of several prominent research centers including the Institute for Advanced Study and a number of other collaborative research centers.

    Heidelberg University

    • According the Times Supplement, Heidelberg University ranked second among all major German universities for 2009 at 57th, just behind TU Munich. The university consists of 12 different faculties that include two medical faculties (one in Heidelberg and one in Mannheim) and faculties of theology, law, philosophy, modern languages, economics and social sciences, behavior and cultural studies, math and computer science, chemistry and earth sciences, physics and astronomy and the biosciences. The university is also the home of 13 separate research centers including the Research Center for International and Interdisciplinary Theology of Heidelberg University and the Centre for Astronomy of Heidelberg University.

    Free University of Berlin

    • The third highest-rated German institution of higher learning is the Free University of Berlin, another world-renown research institution. The Times Higher Education Supplement placed the university 94th among all universities in the world. The university consists of 17 different departments, centers or institutes. Academic departments include biology, chemistry and pharmacy, business and economics, earth sciences, education and psychology, history and cultural studies, law, math and computer science, philosophy and humanities, physics, political science and social science, medicine and veterinary medicine. Institutes include the Institute for East European Studies, Institute for Latin American Studies and the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies. The university also houses a center for French studies and one for Italian studies.
