State Architecture Schools in Illinois

A number of public, state universities in Illinois grant degrees in architecture, a field the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 16 percent from 2008 through 2018. These schools carry accreditation from the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB), allowing graduates from the program to qualify for the Architect Registration Examination licensing test in the state. Students in the state architecture schools in Illinois can also enjoy reduced tuition if they are state residents.

    • Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is situated in a rural setting, approximately 95 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri. The school is home to nearly 16,000 undergraduate students, 90 percent of which are Illinois residents, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The university grants both bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture. Students in the undergraduate program take courses in design, calculus, architectural history, physics, computer science, building materials and acoustics. Lecture courses in the program average 25 to 125 courses, while lower- and upper-level classes average 25 to 30 students and 10 to 18 students, respectively, reports the university's website. The college awards a number of scholarships exclusively for architecture students. The architecture department also offers international architectural studies travel-trips each year.

    University of Illinois at Chicago

    • Founded in 1965, the University of Illinois at Chicago's urban campus is home to more than 15,000 students, 97 percent of which are from Illinois, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The School of Architecture at the university grants bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture as well as a specialized master's program in health facility design. The first year of the program features foundations coursework in science and mathematics, while the second year focuses on technology. The third year is devoted to environmental and urban design, and during the fourth year, students have the opportunity to take additional courses in areas that interest them. A limited number of co-operative architecture jobs are available for students, allowing them to have a paid position with a Chicago-based firm or company related to the major. Architecture study abroad semesters are offered in Barcelona, Spain and Berlin, Germany each year.

    University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

    • In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 39th among all universities in the United States. With more than 31,000 undergraduate students, the university is the largest post-secondary institution in the state. Founded in 1867, the college is also the oldest state university in Illinois. The School of Architecture grants bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in the field. Approximately 550 undergraduates participate in the bachelor's program, taking classes in calculus, graphics, dynamics, city and regional planning, environmental design and behavioral sciences. The architecture schools's largest international study program allows students to travel to Versailles, France, and opportunities to travel to China, Denmark and Germany are also also available. The career services adviser in the school helps students find internships to gain hands-on experience in the field.
