The University of Lugano is the official Italian university in Switzerland, and all classes at the University are taught in that language or English. Degrees at Lugano are on the standard European timetable; undergraduate degrees are awarded after three years, while master's degrees are earned in two. The public university is extremely new, as it was only established in 1996. The university has four faculties: Economics, Communication Science, Informatics and Architecture, the last of which is located in a satellite campus in the nearby town of Mendrisio. Due in part to its newness, the university is still very small, enrolling only just over 2,000 students.
