Colleges & Universities Near Knoxville, Tennessee

Tennessee is home to an array of colleges and universities, each with its own specialties. The Knoxville area is home to the state's largest school, the main campus of the University of Tennessee (UT), as well as a few smaller colleges and universities. While the majority of students at the smaller Tennessee colleges hail from the Volunteer State, students at UT come from every American state and many foreign countries.

    • The University of Tennessee - Knoxville (UT, is the state's largest university, with over 21,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students. A public university, UT houses nine undergraduate departments and nine graduate departments. The university's academic reputation has improved recently; UT currently stands at 52nd among public universities nationwide. Academic highlights include the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility and the University of Tennessee Arboretum, the last a centerpiece of UT's \"green\" initiative.

    Knoxville College

    • Knoxville College is a historically black college located in Mechanicsville, a neighborhood of central Knoxville. The college was founded in 1875 by the United Presbyterian Church as a high school for former slaves and in 1931 became a four-year college. Although white students had attended the college in the past, Knoxville formally began admitting whites in 1954. Knoxville's campus is situated on 39 acres and with a total enrollment of over 6,000 students, remains one of the most popular colleges for black students in East Tennessee.

    South College

    • South College, formerly known as Knoxville Business College, is a private four-year college with a focus on career building and professional development. A non-residential college, South College has been in Knoxville since 1882. South College awards Master of Health Science degrees , Bachelor of Science degrees, Bachelor of Business Administration degrees and Associate of Science degrees, in addition to a number of academic certificates. Due to increasing popularity of its programs, South moved to a larger facility in West Knoxville in 2006, housing a new library, modern science labs, a student center and writing labs.
