In 2008, U.S. News and World Report ranked the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) as the top graphic design school in the country. Its program respects the foundation and tradition of graphic arts while incorporating and highlighting the technological aspects of today. RISD offers small class sizes; in 2009, the student-teacher ratio was 1:8. Yearly tuition was $36,000 for both in-state and out-of-state students. Financial aid is available in the forms of grants, loans and scholarships. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $27,500 a year and are based on academic and artistic excellence and financial need.

Cranbrook Academy of Art (CA), ranked number two in the U.S. News and World Report, offers graduate level work in graphic design. CA encourages students to truly "love" their craft and think outside of the box. At CA, all students have their own studio to work in. Tuition at CA is $25,958 a year as of Spring 2010. Financial aid is available in the form of grants, loans and scholarships. Scholarships are given out based on merit and are only eligible to students who have attended CA more than two semesters.

The hallowed halls of Yale share the number two rank for graphic design with Cranbrook, and is the only Ivy League school in the top 10. Through its school of art, Yale provides educational context for students to explore their own talents. In 2008, Yale accepted only 9 percent of applicants. Over 75 percent of classes have less than 20 students each. The price of tuition at Yale, including room and board, medical insurance and supplies, is $53,000 as of Spring 2010. Yale has financial aid available in the form of loans and work-study for students.
