Founded in 1889 by the Christian Church--now called the United Church of Christ--Elon University is a private liberal arts college with just more than 5,000 undergraduate students. Having achieved university status in 2001, Elon comprises several schools including the School of Business, School of Law, School of Education, School of Communication and the School of Arts & Sciences. Elon offers MBA and M.Ed. programs and doctoral studies in law and physical therapy. Located on a 575 acre campus, Elon Phoenix provides athletes with 16 programs and a chance to participate on the Division 1 level . It was once primarily a commuter school serving local residents, two-thirds of Elon's students today live outside the state.

With its main campus in nearby Graham, Alamance Community College educates 5,400 students annually at its two campuses and via online learning. ACC was founded in 1958 by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly. It was transformed into a technical institute and later a community college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. ACC offers continuing education classes and course study leading to certification or an Associates degree in business, computer science, engineering, education, mechanics, nursing, science and other disciplines. ACC also prepares students to transfer to the University of North Carolina (UNC) system if they choose to purse a bachelor degree.

Located 30 minutes from Burlington in Greensboro is Bennett College For Women, a United Methodist Church institution. A historically black college, Bennett educates nearly 700 women, offering degrees in elementary education, political science, psychology, English, business administration, arts management, and 10 other programs. Bennett also offers students a dual degree in engineering in cooperation with the North Carolina A&T University, allowing students to gain a second degree through this nearby school. Classes are small and are geared toward helping women of all backgrounds succeed in the world.
