Colleges in the South Chicago Suburbs

Although Chicago has several well-known universities such the University of Chicago, Loyola, Depaul and Northwestern, the city's south suburbs house many colleges as well. Whether situated near the Southwest Suburbs of Palos Park or the Near South Suburbs of South Holland, many public, private and career colleges in the area offer diverse curricula.
  1. Two-Year Colleges

    • For students interested in larger colleges, Moraine Valley Community College enrolls more than 46,000 degree- and non-degree-seeking students as of 2010 and offers more than 100 degrees and certificates. In addition to traditional degrees, students can earn an associate's degree in fine arts, manufacturing technology and machining. Moraine is one of 12 national vanguard colleges.

      Another two-year option, Richard J. Daley College enrolls more than 18,000 students in 50 associate's degree programs as of 2010. The college provides instruction in standard programs such as the biological sciences, English, mathematics and humanities.

      Students wanting a smaller institution might want to consider Kennedy-King College, which has 7,000 students as of 2010. Founded in 1911, this 18-acre campus has many diverse features such as a radio station, as well as child development, real estate, and nursing programs.

    Four-Year Colleges

    • The south suburbs of Chicago also have four-year colleges. Founded in 1853, this private and independent college is one of the few "Great Books" colleges still in existence in the United States. This liberal-arts college has 100 undergraduates and offers three majors. The curriculum centers on the reading and reflection of influential literature, including Euclid's "The Elements," the U.S. Constitution and W.E.B. Dubois' "Souls of Black Folk."

      South Suburban College, a public institution with 17,000 students as of 2010, offers more than 50 classic and cutting-edge programs, such as nanoscience technology and echocardiography.

      For students desiring a Christian education, Trinity is a four-year, private, liberal arts college. With more than 1,400 students on its 50-acre campus as of 2010, Trinity Christian College offers many standard and church-affiliated programs.

    Career Colleges

    • The south suburb of Chicago also has many career colleges. Robert Morris College offers accelerated degrees as well as dual degrees in a variety of programs, including culinary arts, computer-assisted drawing and law enforcement administration. According to the Robert Morris Admission's department, the school has an average enrollment of 4,000 students as of 2010.

      For those who prefer a smaller program, Fox college has approximately 200 students as of 2010, according to the Office of Admissions. The college has a Veterinary Technology Institute housed in the southern suburb of Tinley Park. Graphic design and health-care programs are available at other sites in the city.
