Since it opened in 1964, Northern Virginia Community College has been offering a low-cost community college education. With multiple locations across the commonwealth, NOVA is the largest educational institution in Virginia and the second-largest community college in the country. As of March 2010, more than 72,000 students attend one of Northern Virginia's campuses, which employ 2,300 faculty and staff members. The campus in Manassas is just one of six locations available throughout the region. NOVA offers more than 160 certificate programs and degrees at the associate's level, along with a number of long-distance learning alternatives. American sign language, fire science, historic preservation and a wide range of health careers are among the degree programs offered at NOVA.

About 3,000 students attend Patrick Henry Community College each semester, as of March 2010. The college is a public two-year colleage offering associate degree programs and other community education options at its campus. A total of more than 30,000 local residents have pursued their educational pursuits at Patrick Henry during its 40 years in operation. The college offers more than 60 fields of study in areas that include general studies, nursing and business administration. The college prides itself on getting its students involved in the community, including tutoring and mentoring programs for local students and projects like Habitat for Humanity.

Lord Fairfax Community College has three campuses situated geographically through the northern part of the commonwealth. Its main Fauquier campus is in Warrenton, about 15 miles from Manassas. The school was opened in 1970 and has grown from there to serve the community college needs of the surrounding communities. In addition to more than 75 associate's degree opportunities, LFCC also provides onsite access to many bachelor's degrees programs. The college serves more than 7,500 students annually in such diverse offerings as sign language, kitchen and bath design and the health professions.
